Driving in the winter months can be hazardous. If you are a new driver, you might feel nervous about navigating winter weather, whether it be heavy rain, snow, or ice. One of the most important things is to be prepared and to leave plenty of time for your journey. Here’s my advice on ensuring you stay safe on the road.

Before You Start Your Journey

Before you set off to your destination, consider the following points:

  • Assess the Necessity of Your Journey: Is your trip absolutely necessary? Could it wait until conditions improve?

  • Check Your Route: If it’s icy, there may be reported incidents or areas that haven’t been gritted. Check this beforehand.

  • Allow Extra Time: Give yourself plenty of time for your journey.

  • Charge Your Phone: Ensure your phone is fully charged in case you need to use it in an emergency.

  • Inform Family: Tell your family where you’re travelling and your estimated arrival time.

  • Fuel Up: Make sure your fuel tank is full. If you need to stop to refuel, allow time for this in your journey.

  • Inspect Wiper Blades: Check that your wiper blades are clean and in good condition. For more advice on this, click here.

  • Top Up Screen Wash: Ensure your screen wash is topped up.

  • Wear Appropriate Footwear: Choose comfortable and dry footwear for driving.

Driving in Wet Weather

As is typical of the UK, we experience our fair share of wet weather, especially in winter. If you find yourself driving in very wet conditions, remember to:

  • Use Dipped Headlights: This helps you remain visible to other drivers.

  • Avoid Rear Fog Lights: They can obscure your brake lights and dazzle vehicles behind you.

  • Drive Slowly Through Flood Water: Particularly deep water, as driving at speed could damage your engine. If unsure about the water depth, do not drive through it.

  • Never Drive Through Fast-Flowing Water: This can be extremely dangerous.

  • Test Your Brakes: After leaving flood water, check that your brakes are functioning properly.

  • Maintain a Safe Distance: In wet weather, stopping distances are at least double. Leave at least a 4-second gap from the car in front.

  • Be Considerate: When driving past pedestrians, cyclists, and horse riders, avoid splashing them.

Driving in Snow and Ice

Driving in freezing temperatures poses its own risks. Icy roads can lead to skidding, so knowing how to drive safely in these conditions is crucial:

  • Clear Snow from Your Car: Remove any snow from your vehicle before starting your journey.

  • Use an Ice Scraper: Clear ice from your windscreen and windows.

  • Drive Slowly: Take your time to ensure safety.

  • Check for Winter Mode: If your car has a winter mode, use it. If not, start in second gear to reduce wheel slip.

  • Increase Your Following Distance: Leave up to 10 times the normal recommended gap, as tyres grip less efficiently in cold conditions.

  • Use Low Gears: When driving downhill, use a low gear and avoid unnecessary braking.

  • Brake Before Turning: If your car feels like it’s losing grip, stay calm and ease off the accelerator.

  • Use Dipped Headlights: In heavy snow, this helps maintain visibility.

  • Turn on Fog Lights: If visibility drops significantly—below 100 metres—activate your fog lights.

Additional Tips for Winter Driving

Stay Calm and Focused

Driving in winter can be stressful, especially for new drivers. It's important to stay calm and focused. If you feel overwhelmed, take a deep breath and remind yourself that you can handle the situation.

Prepare for Emergencies

Always be prepared for emergencies. Keep a blanket, water, and snacks in your car. A small first aid kit can also be very helpful.

Know Your Vehicle

Understanding your vehicle's features can make a significant difference. Familiarise yourself with your car's controls, especially those related to heating and defrosting.

Practice Defensive Driving

Defensive driving is key in winter conditions. Stay alert and anticipate the actions of other drivers. This can help you react appropriately and avoid accidents.

Seek Guidance

For more advice on staying safe and avoiding a breakdown as temperatures drop, speak with your instructor. They can provide tailored tips and techniques to boost your confidence on the road.

Driving in winter weather can be daunting, but with the right preparation and mindset, you can navigate these challenges safely. Remember, every journey is an opportunity to learn and improve your skills. Stay safe and enjoy your driving experience!
